Description

The message of Spanish poet Antonio Machado emphasizes that life’s journey is not predetermined, but rather, we forge our own way forward as we live and experience life. The poet’s text suggests that our choices and actions create the path we take. The B section reflects the moments when we choose to make new footprints as we find our way in life.

José Rivera has composed the music for the beautiful piece "Caminante, no hay camino" (Traveler, There Is No Path) for female choir and piano, based on the verses of the Spanish poet Antonio Machado. This work will become a staple in the repertoire for treble voice choirs due to its joy, freshness, and optimism, its excellent craftsmanship, and the striking contrast achieved in the second part with its succession of syncopated rhythms reminiscent of Caribbean rhythms. It will be a resounding success for any choir that performs it.

Translation

Spanish

Caminante no hay camino
son tus huellas y nada más
Caminante no hay camino,
Se hace el camino al andar.
Al andar se hace el camino,
Y al volver la vista atrás
Se vé la senda que nunca
Se ha de volver a pisar.

English

Traveler, there is no road
only your own footprints, nothing else
Traveler, there is no road
The path is made as you walk.
As you walk, the path is made,
and when you look back
you see the path that
will never be again traveled.
